I'm a people watcher. It's not something I'm particularly proud of or embarrassed by, it's just something I do, and surprisingly, learn from. Among my observations is the fact that our college campus is much like a high school in that the student body has assembled itself into distinguished cliques. Only, unlike high school, these cliques aren't based on sports or hobbies, they are based on race.
Somewhere near the end of spring break I found myself stuck at a bus stop in Flint. To make a long story short, my mom ended up giving myself and four exchange students a ride back to Saginaw. As these acquaintances became friends and their friends became friends, I found myself on the inside of a clique that was not my own and I loved every minute of it. However, in the back of my mind I always wondered why I was the only white girl accepted into this group of friends. Tags: Dating Interracial friendship |

South Korean society is smitten with the issue of ``interracial'' or ``mixed'' marriages ― typically rural Korean bachelors marrying (South East) Asian women. Statistics are always cited: percentages, divorce rates, projected percentages of future mixed-marriage offspring and so on.
Others speak of mixed-marriage repercussions on Korea's ``ethnic homogeneity'' with some assuming that such homogeneity has always been and others implying that it never has been. Amidst a rocketing divorce rate, others speak of ``saving'' these marriages, most commonly referring to communication differences, both cultural and linguistic. In fact, there's never a shortage of discussion on the various ways an interracial marriage can be undermined: miscommunication, or the inability to communicate at all, deceit on either side, pressure, and cultural dislocation. Halfway into a passionate discussion about the teenage pregnancy and gang problems at some Houston-area schools, ninth-grader Sha'Kayla Nunez shared this stereotype:
"It's like the Mexicans got to be pregnant, the blacks got to be ghetto and the white people got to be polite."
Nunez, who is black, didn't believe this. But she, along with the other students at Tuesday's Teen Summit on Race Relations, was searching for a way to articulate the prejudice and racism that color her everyday life.
The annual convention, started by the Inter-Ethnic Forum of Houston 11 years ago, included close to 1,500 students from 80 public and private high schools, stretching across the Houston area, from the wealthiest suburbs to the poorest enclaves. After a rally early that morning, the students split into small discussion groups. Tags: Dating Interracial Dating Race Relations |
